I was at a fundraiser for Operation P.L.A.Y. (http://www.operationplay.org) a non profit organization that is dedicated to ending the obesity epidemic in the state of Georgia and I had a chance to hang out with Chamique Holdsclaw who is an Olympic Gold Medalist, 6 time WNBA All-Star and 3 time champion at the University of Tennessee. We were catching up on what she was up to and one of the first things I mentioned was the book she recently birthed called Breaking Through: Beating the Odds Shot after Shot.
The cool thing about Chamique is that she is a certified superstar. Who wouldn’t want to be around that energy. The thing that you may not know about Chamique is that she is one of the most transparent star athletes that you will ever come across. Everything from her wonderful personality, her witty humour, and her genuine care of people and their personal conditions. As Holdsclaw accepted her award for being a leading advocate for battling childhood obesity she spoke about her rise to success but also her bout with depression.
In her book Breaking Through, Chamique talks about basketball, love and depression. Many times people suffer from depression in secrecy. Chamique’s goal is to bring awareness to depression as well as other mental health issues. Chamique states that often times the symptoms of mental health issues are ignored or are not taken seriously. As she goes out to the masses she is sharing with everyone, that it is okay to seek help with depression and that it is nothing to be ashamed of. I was fortunate enough to pick up 2 autographed copies from her. For the rest of you, if you want to find out more about her book, I copied the link to amazon.
