Here’s a quote from my brand new book, Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Wellness:
“The pills were symbolic. They were a symbol that I was broken and needed…not a fix, but a band–aid that I would have to re-apply every morning and every night. “
When most people think about a band-aid, they understand that it is a temporary solution to a problem. It is a cover up or a protector for a cut or wound. A band-aid is good for only so long. Then you need to replace that band-aid with a new one. When I discovered that I had a potentially fatal heart attack, the doctor ordered me to take medication to keep my heart rate down. At 18 years old it was a hard pill to swallow in the figurative and literal sense. It was a frustrating time to say the least.
12 years later as I reflect on that time, I’m glad that the “band-aid” is no longer necessary because it is a symbol of my liberty and independence from dependence.
